Simply Anna

As you may know by now, I absolutely adore Anna Karina and Marianne Faithfull. So I became particularly excited when I found that they both starred in a 1967 French TV movie called 'Anna'.

I dare you to watch the trailer and not crack a smile. 'Anna' is colourful, crazy and a musical with bizarre nouvelle vague influences and at least a touch of insanity. All in all a vintage gem. 

If you are like me, and have an interest in French cinema and the 60's, it is probably worth checking out!

Did I mention that the film was scored by Serge Gainsbourg and Marianne sings? Too good. 

La Nouvelle Vague

The other day I bought Godard's Une Femme est Une Femme (A Woman Is A Woman), so I thought I'd put up some screenshots, as Anna Karina looks gorgeous as usual! 

The film is a semi-musical that tells the story of a stripper named Angela and her attempts to convince her boyfriend to have a baby with her. It's all out Godard fun, if that's your sort of thing. In my opinion Godard is god. He is amazing, groundbreaking, funny, intelligent, and much more.  So here's some quotes from the man himself...

Photography is the truth. Cinema is the truth twenty-four times per second.

A story should have a beginning, a middle, and an end...but not necessarily in that order.

All you need for a movie is a gun and a girl.

To be or not to be. That's not really a question.

Pierrot Le Fou

I'm writing an essay at the moment on Jean-Luc Godard's Pierrot Le Fou, which basically means I get to watch Anna Karina running around the French wilderness looking amazing. French New Wave definitely isn't for everyone, but Pierrot is worth checking out for a number of reasons:

1. Anna Karina looks stunning and manages numerous outfit changes despite being on the run from gangsters

2. It's a love story with many iconic moments, such as when Ferdinand and Marianne drive their stolen convertible into the sea

3. It's French, need I say more

4. Anna Karina randomly breaks into song sometimes adding a touch of musical to the production

5. The cinematography is beyond gorgeous

6. French New Wave cinema was one of the most influential art-film movements in film history
